For our 2.0 update's weather system, we had a need for a set of icons to represent progression in biomes. I initially started with a direction of an assortment of bags and gear, but there was concern that it gave the wrong impression of items being 'obtained' that you didn't actually have, and that it didn't translate well at a small size.
With direction from the team, I explored a merit-badge/patch system using a combination of custom work and stock imagery that best represented our biomes. I then ran this through Adobe Sampler's Embriodery Patch Generator, as well as Anatolii Ponomarev's Patch Generator in Substance Designer, to see which results worked the best. I ended up going with Adobe Sampler and used the render preview to get a good icon for each patch.
This direction was later dropped, so the solid vector patches were used instead. This was due to legibility concerns - the icons looked great at full size, but at smaller sizes it was proving too difficult to have the fine details be visible.
