BrianW - Personal Rebrand

It's been about five years since I made my original branding, and while I stand by the work I did back then, I felt as though I've grown significantly as an artist. I don't like the use of fonts that, while very talented and impressive, don't quite represent my capabilities rather than someone else's. I also wasn't a huge fan of my mascot's depiction in my original logo, and I hated that I didn't prepare alternate arrangements for different formats as I typically do. Plus, with my start in gamedev, I've started relying more on my own drawing and writing. Authenticity in a post-AI world matters more than ever before, and being authentic is a core concern of mine. I wanted to convey that in my brand.

So, over the last week or so, I've set out in my free time reworking my branding to better suit me.

I first identified the key problems listed above in my existing branding, outlining exactly what I wanted my new direction to say. Then, using Procreate on my iPad, I'd sketch out an assortment of ideas. I'd bring the best to Illustrator to use a combination of custom penwork and autotrace, which helped retain a level of the authentic bumpy and messy linework I make while drawing.

Once I identified all of the pieces I liked the best, I separated them into artboards and created final designs that accounted for all possible arrangements - some including white space, some with it pre-cut. I then used these assets to change my Portfolio, Resume, Business Cards, and Social Accounts. I used InDesign for my resume and business cards, as is typical in that type of work.

My process began drawing between Procreate and Illustrator on my iPad. I prototyped a ton of ideas for revamping my branding, and used both custom written type and fonts available via Adobe CC.

In the end, I wanted to call back to my original design, but improve it with a flair that is unmistakably my own. I chose to emulate my signature slightly in the "Wagner" portion of the text (although admittedly my signature is not that nice)

My overall goal was to trim fat and make the overall appearance of my branding less "loud", while also allowing more of my personality to shine through.
